John Patterson and Christian Myers co-founded Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative as a spin-off to the non-profit viaVélo bicycle delivery and pedicab service that they started in 2009. Both John and Christian saw the opportunity and demand for a community-based and volunteer-run bicycle co-op in Alexandria, Virginia, to grow and empower a more inclusive biking community through affordability, education, and embracing the fun of riding.
Along with a committed group of “Véloteers” who continue to be the lifeblood of the organization, Vélocity Bicycle Cooperative was launched in May 2010 and received strong support from the DC cycling community, Alexandria neighborhoods, and the City of Alexandria. John managed the administration, Christian ran the bike shop operations and the youth education program, and Véloteers provided their hours, energy, and enthusiasm.

Over the years, Vélocity has continued to grow. The co-op now offers bicycle sales and professional service at two shops, one in Alexandria and one in Arlington, with the Alexandria shop also hosting instruction in bicycle maintenance. Vélocity operates volunteer programs at a warehouse in Alexandria, providing experience in bicycle repair to all who are interested while refurbishing donated bikes for those in need. The co-op promotes sustainability by reusing and recycling donated bicycles and making cycling accessible as an alternative to fossil-fuel-powered transportation. Vélocity also supports youth cycling through partnerships with local schools, Scout groups and community organizations.
